IT'S CUP TIME AGAIN

15-Jun 05:17, by Ketts

The draw for the opening round of the Carabao Cup will be made on Friday.

The draw for the first round of the League Cup - now called the Carabao Cup - will be made on Friday.‎

Charlton have a pretty dismal record in cup competitions, with defeats by lower league opposition being a regular feature.‎

Their record in the opening round of the League Cup over the last five seasons is a microcosm of this.‎

In 2012/13, the season started later than usual, and the League Cup tie with Leyton Orient at The Valley was the Addicks' first game of the season.‎

Charlton were about to kick-off their Championship campaign after winning the League One title the previous season.

But Chris Powell's team came a cropper in this game. Scott Wagstaff gave the home side the lead just before the half-hour mark, only for Orient ‎to level on the stroke of half-time.

Extra time could not seperate the two sides, and the game went to penalties, with the east Londoners winning 4-3.‎

The next three seasons saw the Addicks drawn at home against lower league opposition, and they took full advantage every time.

In 2013/14, two goals from Simon Church, plus a strike from Danny Green, and a late Joe Pigott penalty g‎ave Charlton a comfortable 4-0 win over Oxford.

Twelve months later, a penalty from Yoni Buyens, two strikes from Lawrie Wilson, and another goal from Church saw Colchester despatched 4-0.

‎In 2015/16, Tony Watt, Karlan Ahearne-Grant, Zakarya Bergdich and Reza Ghoochannejhad
‎were the scorers in a 4-1 win over Dagenham & Redbridge.

The Addicks were back on the road last August, playing their first ever competitive match at Whaddon Road against Cheltenham.

It was a disappointing evening in Gloucestershire for the south Londoners. A goal after 17 minutes from former Charlton youngster, Harry Pell, was enough to eliminate his‎ former club.‎

‎The draw can be seen live at 1.00pm Friday on the dedicated Carabao Cup Facebook page, and also on Sky Sports' internet site.
