THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD

16-Jun 05:37, by Ketts

Charlton fans face many lengthy journeys to follow their team next season.

Friday's Carabao Cup draw will be followed by the release of the League One fixtures next Wednesday.

The 2017/18 season will be one of the most arduous for fans who follow the team around‎ the country.

There will be no away games against teams with a London postcode - AFC Wimbledon play in Kingston -‎ and only a handful of games that could be considered to be relatively local.

Nor will there be many mid distance games, the vast majority will involve lengthy journeys.

Categorising journeys as near, far and somewhere in between can be subjective, but as a rough guide, this is what faces the travelling fan next season.

Local or Short Distance Journeys:

AFC Wimbledon
Gillingham
MK Dons‎
Oxford
Southend

Medium Distance Journeys:

‎Northampton
Peterborough
Portsmouth‎
Walsall

Long Distance Journeys

Blackburn‎
B‎lackpool‎
Bradford‎
Bristol Rovers‎
Bury
Doncaster‎
Fleetwood‎
Oldham‎
Plymouth‎
Rochdale‎
Rotherham‎
Scunthorpe‎
Shrewsbury‎
‎Wigan

Fans also face potential long hauls in three cup competitions.

One of the first things travelling fans look for when the fixtures are published‎ are the midweek games.

‎The schedule has not been kind to Addicks fans in recent seasons, with games at places such as Blackpool, Bolton, Doncaster, Huddersfield, Port Vale and Oldham being amongst their Tuesday night destinations.

Given the geographical location of Charlton's opponents for the forthcoming season, more difficult midweek journeys look inevitable.
