SHREWSBURY GAME IN DOUBT

08-Jan 09:13, by Ketts

Charlton's game at Shrewsbury on 23 January is likely to be postponed.

Charlton are now 10/1 favourites to win the Checkatrade Trophy.

The competition is almost impossible to predict, with clubs fielding sides of varying strengths.‎

In the last round the Chelsea Under-21 team included a number of over age players, who were full internationals. The side may have complied with the rules, but was not in the spirit of the competition.‎

This week's fixtures are the last set of games that will be regionalised. For the first time, the qualifiers will go into‎ a national draw for the quarter and semi finals.

In previous years, the competition had been regionalised all the way through, with the Northern and Southern section winners meeting at Wembley in the final.

The competition has never been popular with fans, and this season they face the possibility of their club playing at the other end of the country.

Charlton‎ face Oxford at The Valley on Tuesday evening. In another fixture, Shrewsbury will entertain Blackpool.

If either club make it through to the last eight, their rearranged league game at the Montgomery Waters Meadow - scheduled to be played on Tuesday 23 January - will be postponed.

The quarter-finals of the Checkatrade Trophy will be played that week and take precedence over league games.

Though the competition is unpopular, if the Addicks beat Oxford on Tuesday, they will be just two games away from a Wembley appearance, which may stir the interest of fans.‎
